How Does Stevenson Explore The Notion Of Duality Throughout The Novel Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde? Essay
Robert Louis Stevenson is renowned all over the world today for his contributions to English literature; he makes his skill evident in his ability to utilize the duality of soul concept through example of one Henry Jekyll, showing in many ways what can and does happen when Jekyll decides to experiment with the aspect of his evil side and bring it to the surface as the twisted character of Edward Hyde; incorporating the interplay of good and evil, in his novel Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, published in 1886. Stevenson creates an effective mystery tale set in Victorian London and does this by presenting sub themes that relate to the central theme of duality. He keeps readers engaged with the developing plot and unravels pieces of the puzzle as the story unfolds, creating an effective mystery tale while his emotions are shown as the nature of humankind and Victorian moralities are explained in one of the most famous novels of the present day. In the story I have noted that Stevenson presents the reader with the complexities of human nature through his portrayal of characters. For example, he describes Utterson as being ââ¬Å"dreary, and, yet somehow lovableâ⬠, he then reveals that although he ââ¬Å"enjoyed the theatreâ⬠he had not been for ââ¬Å"twenty yearsâ⬠. These descriptions are contradictory and reveal that Utterson has two sides to his personality, one of which he now seeks to suppress, the other a respectable, reliable and responsible man. I believe that Stevenson needs readers to relate to and rely on Utterson as he is the most frequent narrator of the story, therefore he presents him with this censored past where he used to be much more outgoing, yet now he is old and respectable. Also, Victorians were much more impressionable than people of the present day, therefore Uttersonââ¬â¢s upkeep of his respectable, sensible side to his personality publicly and the fact that he ââ¬Å"drank gin when he was aloneâ⬠, which helps us to warm to him even more, was vital to Stevensonââ¬â¢s success in displaying the central theme of Duality through the sub themes of Suppression and Respectability, explored through the character of Dr. Utterson. I think this is successful because even in a character such as Utterson, who we all come to empathise with and rely on, can be susceptible to duality, just as any human being can, therefore it makes us think and question ourselves. Another way in which Stevenson represents Duality is through the setting of the door in the first chapter; aptly titled ââ¬Å"Story of The Doorâ⬠. The door is situated on a typical, fairly rich Victorian street which is described to have ââ¬Å"cleanliness and gaiety of noteâ⬠, this gives the impression that this area has a reputation to upkeep, however, the splendid view of the street is ruined by a door which stands out somewhat, ââ¬Å"Blistered and distainedâ⬠with ââ¬Å"prolonged and sordid negligenceâ⬠. This description uses great imagery that causes an impact on the reader. One interpretation a reader could have is that, despite the cleanliness and class of the street, duality is shown in the fact that behind closed doors things may not always be what they seem, therefore the are two sides, one which seeks to suppress what is really going on inside, and one which has a respectable reputation to uphold; just like the character of Dr. Utterson. Also, this could be representation of how rich and poor live so close together, as in Victorian times a rich street could be directly adjacent to a poor, therefore Stevenson is demonstrating how different these classes are, yet they are living closely together, another way in which duality is explained. Furthermore, Stevenson could also be relating to his previous life in his hometown of Edinburgh, which was divided into poor and rich, old and new by a single river. Stevenson, who lived on the rich and new side often ventured into the other and gained an insight on how different the two sides were, whilst seeking his inner temptations and leading a double life, therefore duality was recognised within himself. We know that the door is significant in this chapter and it is evident in the fact that the chapter is named about it, therefore it makes us realised that it is important for a reason, and that reason is to represent duality further in a setting. This is successful as there are many different interpretations to make, yet all lead to the same conclusion of duality, and this chapter is vital in letting readers know that duality is, and will be, the key to the story. A further way in which Stevenson explores duality is in the structure of the novel. The novelââ¬â¢s structure is unique in the fact that it isnââ¬â¢t written entirely in first person, as it would have been possible to tell the story in the manner of a confession from Jekyllââ¬â¢s point of view. We are limited to Utterson when reading in an omniscient view for the first eight chapters, however after this in Chapter 9 it switches to first person, where we read ââ¬Å"Dr Llanyonââ¬â¢s Narrativeâ⬠, and after this it is again first person, where we hear from Dr. Henry Jekyll himself. The structural and linguistic devices employed by Stevenson create an unusual atmosphere of controlled suspense, which surrounds the story. The gradual building up of horror and destruction is achieved through a slow accumulation of unemotional detail. The fact that the story is written in the view of three different, distinct people gives it three different endings, making us go back in time to read from another point of view, this uncovers more of the story and keeps the reader engaged as they can finally see behind the closed doors and find out what they have been dying to find out throughout the story. This notion of suspense keeps the genre of mystery intact as only minor clues are given away until the three different endings, each one gathering more evidence, this is extremely successful because of this and further benefits the theme of duality, and of course mystery. Robert Louis Stevensonââ¬â¢s tale can be interpreted as a coherent warning to Victorian society of the potential effect of such asphyxiated social, ethical and moral conventions and I would agree that some of these still exist today. Through the use of the sub-themes of characters, setting and structure Stevenson makes us realise that duality is present within ourselves, and can be dangerous at times. Furthermore, he explores what it means to be human thus ensuring that his mysterious tale is as revealing, relevant and enjoyable to a reader in 21st century as it was in the 19th.

Legalize Prostitution Essay
Legalize Prostitution BY rwl 9680101 Stand-Alone Project, Part A: Select a contemporary legal issue discussed during this course. Select a topic that interests you. Perform the research. Prostitution: Ethics to Legitimize the Business Many people find the ethical considerations of the death penalty to be highly controversial. However, another highly controversial topic is the legalization of prostitution. Considering my knowledge on this subject and talking to average women who arenââ¬â¢t prostitutes, IVe come to the conclusion that prostitution should be legalized. The courts and the police have more to contend with than two adult eople having consensual sex. Prostitution has a long and interesting history. Itââ¬â¢s mentioned in numerous texts and often referred to as the ââ¬Å"oldest profession. â⬠Indeed, it has always been a common way for women to make money, even in biblical times. It wasnââ¬â¢t until Christianity and the Bible condemned prostitution within versus such as Proverbs 23:27-28, ââ¬Å"For a prostitute is a deep pit and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she lies in wait, and multiplies the unfaithful among men. Basically, prostitutes were shunned for their corruption of married men as a moral conflict. Historically, it was common to trade women for property, pleasure and used as alliances between countries and kingdoms. A person can be against prostitution all he or she wants to, but the fact remains that prostitution happened in the past and will continue to happen in the future. Itââ¬â¢s a common a ct of the sexes where biological needs can out way monetary cost and societal norm ethical barriers. The business minded culture would call this supply and demand and the blue collar worker would call it an honest days work for an honest days pay. Either way, itââ¬â¢s not that legitimate kingdoms or governments have not recognized prostitution hroughout history, but it appears that they merely renamed and Justified it into something legitimate. History also reminds us that in many ancient cultures, female prostitution was an accepted profession for many women, especially those who could not earn a living any other way ââ¬â husbands killed in war or died from laboring. It wasnââ¬â¢t until the church ââ¬â especially the Christian church ââ¬â decided that sex was bad and that prostitution became a ââ¬Ësordidââ¬â¢ form of employment. Even then, on and off, prostitution and brothels enjoyed varying levels of acceptance in the public eye. Some cities and towns had entire ââ¬Ëred light districtsââ¬â¢ where brothels were, if not welcomed, at least tolerated, so long as the owners and management made their ââ¬Ëdonationsââ¬â¢ to the local law enforcement. Thus, while strictly illegal, the proliferation of prostitution enabled police corruption to flourish as well. The roots of prostitution may be more evolutionary than previously thought stemming from hereditary instincts of our long forgotten ancestry. A study was conducted in University in Singapore which was accepted for publication in the Journal Animal Behavior (Dec, 2007). In his study of the macaque monkeys he discovered that the mount of grooming a male performs on a female prior to a sexual interaction is related to the supply/demand ratio of females per male and males to females at the time of the grooming. Hereââ¬â¢s where that ââ¬Å"supply and demandâ⬠or ââ¬Å"an honest days work for an honest days payââ¬â¢ philosophy comes into play. Basically, male monkeys ââ¬â especially lower status ones ââ¬â have to groom more and longer to get some female action when there are fewer females around. Gumert, analyzed a wild population of long-tailed macaques at TanJung Puting National Park in Indonesia, from 2003 to Dr. Gumert analyzed the long-tailed macaques from 2003 to 2005 located at 005. the TanJung Putting National Park in Indonesia.

Poem ââ¬ÅThe Ravenââ¬Â by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
This is a magnificent piece of poetry. The hypnotic monotony of rhythm reflected the speakerââ¬â¢s frame of mind. The poem is clearly about the sorrow he experienced over the death of his wife and her ideal, spiritual love. The raven, being a symbol of death, and the lines, ââ¬Å"Other friends have flown before-On the morrow he will leave me as my hopes have flown before,â⬠meant that he was afraid death might abandon him, leaving him comfortless. Then he sits in front of the bird wondering why the raven croaked ââ¬Å"Nevermoreâ⬠. The raven is trying to tell him ââ¬Å"she shall press, ah, nevermoreâ⬠, but he thinks the bird is lying because his grief is so great, and he doesnââ¬â¢t believe that Lenoreââ¬â¢s death is final. When he realized that the raven is trying to tell him that her death is final, he becomes angry and upset. He begs the raven to tell him if she is in heaven, whill the angels love her and take care of her the way she should be. In the last four lines of the poemwhere ââ¬Å"the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting,â⬠and the shadows that ââ¬Å"shall be lifted-nevermore,â⬠mean that the raven is a symbol of the wisdom and knowledge that he will always have memories of Lenore, but that her death is final. He will always mourn her.

People`s Points of View on the Gerrymandering Issue Article
People`s Points of View on the Gerrymandering Issue - Article Example This commentator laments the removal of a largely monolithic voting block from diverse Congressional districts to create ones with little or no opposition to elevate congressmen and congresswomen who may push their own agendas back home. He adds that only when both parties or the Courts realize the damage such gerrymandering has done to the country will the negative tenor of political debates eventually subside, but he is not banking on that possibility. The second commentator takes a more realistic view in expressing his favor of transparency. He claims that gerrymandering may be anti-democratic, but it is done by partisans who clearly show their partisanship. It is obvious to him that the public is aware of the political agenda of the candidates they elect and owns up to his preference for politicians whose motives are out in the open do the redistricting than other ââ¬Å"unelected and accountable ââ¬Ëworthiesââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ do so. He thinks that there is no such thing as an unbiased district map and that political preferences are built-in in some districts. The third and last commentator discussed the threat of extremism posed by gerrymandering. He claims that when parties have safe districts party extremists get elected, to the disappointment and dissatisfaction of the American electorate with Congress. He explains that the massive disappointment is caused by these extremists who are often unwilling to agree on policies set by the majority of the electorate since they are decided to firmly put their foot down on their own belief system. This last commentator believes that extremism in Congress is equivalent to most congressmen believing that it is more important to take a stand than to be effective as lawmakers.

Good Grocers, Inc Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Good Grocers, Inc - Essay Example This calls for the consideration of a mediatorââ¬â¢s assistance. In addition, since ,mediation can be applied at any stage of a conflict, the two parties may consider adopting it. The mediator will support the two parties in exploring ways through which they can resolve their differences. Each of the parties may or may not consider a lawyerââ¬â¢s services when going to the mediation. This will depend on the nature of the problem (LexisNexis, 2013, p.78): the problem seems a bit serous since the customer plans to sue the manager, therefore, both parties may need a lawyer. Both parties must always consult their attorney before finalizing the agreement so that they can be sure that they have made complete informed decisions. This will also enable them determine whether all their rights are protected. In this situation, the mediator will help manage the mediation process and facilitate reconciliation between the two conflicting parties. The mediator will not determine the decision nor enforce an agreement. The two parties will participate directly and will be responsible for devising and enforcing their own agreement or settlement. The mediation can be done at the mediatorââ¬â¢s office or an agreed location. When the mediation commences, the mediator will explain the process and the essentials such as rules. Either parties or their respective attorneys will have the chance of explaining their opinions in consideration to the dispute. The mediator will support them in understanding each otherââ¬â¢s opinion. In some instance, the mediator may meet each of them separately. This may assist in addressing factual and emotional issues and offer both sides the time to receive legal advice from their attorney (LexisNexis, 2013, p.79). Generally, the agreements may be creative. The two parties may end up reaching a solution that is not present in a court of law. For instance, the manger after an agreement with the customer, may

Uses of calculus in business Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Uses of calculus in business - Research Paper Example Researchers have indicated that calculus is one of the modern facets of mathematics that has been effectively used to assess certain changes or arrive at certain decisions in the current business world. The use of directives to calculate certain aspects of business has been evident in various ways. People engaged in undertaking real estate business have applied the concept of derivatives in calculus to determine their overall income for instance: If a land owner with a complex apartment with 250 houses, each house rented on a monthly rate of y. How many houses should the owner of the apartment rent in order to ensure that he maximizes his income? The main concern in this case is to maximize the income by determining the number of maximum houses to be rented meaning; y ranges between 0 and 250 whereby: 0âⰠ¤ y âⰠ¤ 250. In order to determine the solution, it is important to determine critical points that occur between 0 and 250. Therefore: Owing to the fact that the profit function is in a continuous dimension, the maximum value can be attained by plugging in the already identified critical value which is 200 at the end point existing in the range as follows: On the other hand, differentiation has also been used to perform various business activities in the contemporary society for example it has been widely used to calculate the maximum sizes of packaging materials with a few known dimensions while missing other important dimensions. A real example of the application of differentiation has been evident i.e. in a scenario where a sales person wants to determine the maximum size of a packaging box with a known length= x and known width= y, but without a known height. This can be arrived at
